Knapp, DO, ACOFP President, 2002-2003\n\nInterviewers: Archival \u0026 Historical Committee\n\nDate: March 22, 2013\n\nLocation: Las Vegas, Nevada\n\nDr. Kieren P. Knapp’s presidency of the ACOFP from 2002-2002 was impacted by the disaster of 9/11. He says, “My theme was to get people involved with our projects…suddenly everybody wanted to make everything better…people jumped in…”. As a result, standards for a rural residency program were established which still exist today. In addition, ACOFP met formally with AAFP for the first time. As a result of that meeting dual programs were developed. Another project was centered on helping each state become more self-sufficient. “It was exciting to see some of the states grow and develop independence,” he confides. \n\nDuring his year at the helm, Dr. Knapp visited every school where he believed the students were people who wanted to be osteopathic physicians instead of “just doctors”.  He acknowledges that there are excellent people coming out of those programs. At the same time, he has to admit that there has been a change in medical education. “A lot of things we used to learn were how to do things in your office that would help you survive…you didn’t have urgent care centers nor 58 orthopedic surgeons down the road.”","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://centerforthehistoryoffamilymedicine.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3490/collection_resources/162252/file/295011#t=0.0,2301.0304"}]}]}]}
